Energy class and energy label of the pool heat pump | Blog - Microwell

The main reason for investing in a heat pump is energy savings and an overall reduction in heating (or cooling) costs. Microwell pool heat pumps consistently reduce heating costs by up to 80% compared to electric heating or up to 50% compared to gas. Their payback period is typically 2 heating seasons. The specific numbers depend on many factors, of course.

However, we often receive enquiries from our distributors or end users to provide an energy label. The energy label is a product label that we are used to seeing in stores, where we may see labels from "A+++" to "G". These provide information about their energy efficiency or potential savings. You already know that 'A' is good, i.e. great savings and low costs, and 'G' is, on the other hand, small savings and high costs.

And here it is necessary to distinguish between products that bear the name "heat pump". There are heat pumps for houses, heat pumps for swimming pools, air-to-water heat pumps, water-to-water heat pumps, air-to-air heat pumps, etc.

Heat pumps for heating houses (space) and hot water have their own energy label. However, heat pumps for swimming pool do not fall under the definition of "space heaters, cogeneration space heaters and heat pump space heaters providing heat to water-based central heating systems for space heating purposes, and boiler combination heaters and heat pump combination heaters providing heat to water-based central heating systems for space heating purposes and heat to deliver hot drinking and sanitary water" as defined by Commission Regulation (EU) No 813/2013. This Regulation defines specific water and air temperatures (so-called standardised nominal conditions) on the basis of which the energy class of a space heating heat pump can be determined. Therefore, "domestic" heat pumps have an energy label.

There is no such regulation for heat pumps for swimming pools. Accordingly, it is not possible to issue, provide or suggest an energy label for a pool heat pump.

Despite the lack of legislation, Microwell has invested considerable resources in testing laboratories where pool heat pumps can be tested and all technical aspects of operation, including energy savings, can be measured. Every single development, prototype model or selection from series production is fully tested to make sure that the declared parameters are indeed achievable. At Microwell, we use only top-of-the-range components from major manufacturers such as Mitsubishi or Panasonic. Since 2018 we have switched to "inverter" technology, which means that once the pool is initially heated, maintaining the water temperature can be achieved at minimal cost. Specifically, the heat pump can produce up to 15 times as much energy as it consumes.

Also, all Microwell heat pumps are "PV ready", i.e. ready to be powered by photovoltaic panels. The combination of photovoltaic panels and heat pump thus provides cost-free heating or cooling of water.
